Musky are the fish of ten thousand casts — the right lure is what turns a follow into a hookset. Here's how we think about picking baits for the apex freshwater predator.
Size matters — go big or go home
Musky routinely eat prey a third of their body length. That means 6–10 inch profiles are entry-level, and 8–12 inch glide baits and jerkbaits are the workhorse sizes. Undersized lures get followed and refused; full-size profiles get bit.
Action triggers strikes
Glide baits with a wide S-pattern search water and pull fish from cover. Hard jerkbaits with an erratic snap-pause draw reaction strikes from following fish. Match action to mood: aggressive fish crush wide glides; pressured fish need a sharp jerk-and-kill.
Color — match the water, then the mood
Start with natural (perch, sucker, walleye) in clear water and go loud (fire tiger, chartreuse, orange) in stained water or low light. Keep a black or dark-purple bait in the box for overcast days and dusk — silhouettes trigger better than flash in low light.
